To empower girls to break down gender barriers right here at home, see how Plan Canada provides youth across the country with opportunities to develop their leadership, communication and advocacy skills, and create a brighter future!

Leading change: Because I am a Girl clubs

A group of teen girls wearing Because I am a Girl t-shirts.The Because I am a Girl clubs are perfect for anyone who believes girls’ rights are human rights! By starting a club, girls can help create change in their school, community and around the world! Members of Because I am a Girl clubs:

  • Learn about the challenges and obstacles girls face in Canada, and globally, with engaging downloadable resources.
  • Share with their peers, community, and school their knowledge about the challenges girls face. By raising awareness, the clubs help inspire and motivate others to pay attention and take action.
  • Take action by running awareness campaigns or holding fundraising events, helping grow the movement for girls’ rights!

Inspiring youth: The #PlanforChange movement

A group of young men and women jumping into the air.Plan Canada’s youth movement, #PlanforChange, works to engage young people across Canada – girls and boys – in global development. Through a wide variety of programs, including the Youth Advisory Council, Youth Journalists, and the Spread the Net Student Challenge, girls and boys are getting the chance to spearhead initiatives, speak out about issues that matter to them and make their opinions count!

Speaking out: Because I am a Girl Speakers Bureau


The Because I am a Girl Speakers Bureau (GSB) gives girls across Canada between the ages of 14-22, who are passionate about human rights and social justice, the opportunity to be advocates for the Because I am a Girl initiative. Through workshops, GSB members gain the communication skills to speak out about the issues impacting girls, and apply their skills by speaking on behalf of Because I am a Girl at events in their local communities.
